Small Stanišovská Cave

Tour of the underground natural attraction…

The Small Stanišovská Cave, one of the natural monuments of the Jánska Valley and the Low Tatras, and one of the oldest known caves in Slovakia, is only 2 km away from the hotel. You can reach it on foot or by car along the asphalt road – from the hotel parking lot, across the bridge over the Štiavnica stream, out of the area and then to the left, through the forest up along the stream until to the parking lot below the cave and to the ticket office at the entrance to the cave.

The Small Stanišovská Cave is 871 m long, 28 m deep. Together with the Large and New Stanišovská Caves, it forms the extensive cave system, which was created over millions of years by underground water flows. The temperature in the cave is around 6.5 °C, the air humidity is around 95 %. 7 species of bats winter here, the most numerous being the common bat.

The cave is managed by active cavers, local enthusiasts – members of the Slovak Speleological Society, who are still exploring this cave and discovering it further. Despite this, the Small Stanišovská Cave is the only cave in Liptov that is open all year round and daily. The cavers use the profit from the entrance fee for its research and gradual extension of the tour route for the public. With a guide – a caver, by the light of headlamps, which you will use to light yourself in the cave, the experiential tour of the magical underground of the Jánska Valley awaits you. You will walk alongside the walls, which were modeled into indescribable shapes by the water that was flowed underground in the ancient past. You can touch them and, if necessary, hold them, you can feel them, get off the trail and wade through an underground small lake, or even try to crawl through the adit like a caver, which are tempting challenges especially for children. Like this, your guide will not only take you through this cave history, but will also introduce you to the life and work of cavers.

The cave is of medium difficulty, without concrete paths, significant landscaping and without electric lighting. The bottom of the cave is covered with rammed clay and rubble, in places there is also a larger collapsed boulder. You will overcome the height differences along narrow ascending and descending paths made of boulders and rammed clay, and in the 2 – 3 most difficult places along a simple wooden staircase with a railing. The sightseeing route is 410 m long and you will complete it in approximately 45 minutes. Together with the group transfer, up the slope along the relatively narrow forest path from the ticket office to the cave entrance and then back, the visit to this cave will take you approximately an hour.

Every visitor is given a headlamp before entering the cave. No special clothing or footwear is required into this cave. However, if you have children with you, it’s better to take into account in advance that they will be tempted by your guide’s – caver’s – challenges to wade through some shallow small lake, or peek into some tunnel accessible only by crawling, and that they will most likely come out of this cave not only full of unforgettable experiences, but also dirty “like a real caver”. 🙂
